3.5 barrels from 35 year old vines. A deep purple centre with crimson rim. High class Volnay on the nose, a level of class superior to the preceding premiers crus. Some rose petals and peonies in the bouquet as well as red fruit. A beautiful aftertaste, this time with some concentrated brisk red cherries and even a little breadstick note. Pure and fine.

I’ve had my differences with Bouley’s Champans in the past - with the wine never finding the right foot on the day (or was it me?). Finally, in the 2020 vintage, the quality is there, and the Champans is showing excellent form. It is rich, expressive, and outgoing, with an intense yet delicate mid-palate The bouquet has sensational Asian spices - hints of curry and other good stuff.
