Les Barreaux, made famous in recent years by Domaine Anne Gros, is wonderfully sited lying above Richebourg and Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux and alongside Petit Monts and Beaux Monts. Like its big brothers it produces a deeply coloured wine and those with an interest in wines of yesteryear will be delighted to know that Les Barreaux played a big part in the legendary Henri Jayer's Village Vosne-Romanee.

The 2016 is deeply coloured with reds at the centre. Cool fruits on the nose with bags of mineral and spice notes. On the palate the mineral and spice notes dance around the dark fruits. I particularly like the way this builds in the mouth displaying plenty of extract and the underlying freshness of this high, cool site. It is powerful and intense but not heavy, the muscularity is finely tuned. Benchmark Vosne-Romanee from a classic vintage.

Cask sample. Deepish cherry red and freshly scented with cherry fruit and a light and attractive dusty overlay. Dry but with just the right intensity of herbal-edged red fruit. Fresh and lithe. (JH)

The result is a luxurious and mineral Vosne-Romanée with superb color, a velour-like and rich fruit with a discreet touch of pepper. Under the rich fruit there are both structure and tannin which promise great development opportunities.
