Deeper than usual colour. Spicy, aromatic nose of intense red fruits - maraschino cherry, cranberries - with stony minerals and a lifted citrus note so typical of Clos St-Denis. On the palate the wine is deep and fresh, with race and lovely balance. The texture provided by the old vines shines through. Sophisticated and seductive with serious restrained power and a long finish.

1.4 ha. Just 30 cm of clayey-limestone over bedrock. Cask sample.
Deepish crimson. Savoury dark and rocky, lifted by fresh, dark fruits. Serious, sober yet elegant, needing time to become more expressive. Tannins are really fine and dry. Long, understated.

This is a tough and blunt wine, as is usually the case in richer vintages, but it isn’t pretty enough for me to get overly excited. Granted there is muscle and brawn here but I need more polished fruit and aromatic depth to fill me with confidence.
