There’s something that Les St-Georges has that the rest of the top southern Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru don’t. It is a silky texture enhanced by long fine tannins. Over the weekend I opened a bottle of the Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges 2019. I have always loved this cuvee from Chevillon-Chezeaux and the 2019 continues an impressive lineup. The nose is redolent of black cherry, kirsch, liqorice. There a freshness and vibrancy to the fruit flavours. It is sappy, more than spicy. On the palate this wine really struts its stuff. The aformentioned silky texture is impossible to ignore. I wrote silky three times in my notes as every mouthful slid across the palate. It is textured and deeply flavoured, not heavy and not reliant on any tricks. Just great fruit and balance. There are fine chalky tannins on a very long, layered finish. The 2019 display the beautiful fruit of the vintage combined with the inherent class of Les St-Georges. This vineyard really could, or perhaps should, be Grand Cru.
