The 2016 Chambertin lives up to the vineyard’s reputation as one of Burgundy’s finest. There’s a depth to the nose that is more brooding than the previous wines. The black-blue fruit is deeper in flavour with liquorice and iron notes in the background. A first a little closed. But then with air the wine started to open. The finish with more acid and tannin seemed to motor on as the complexity of the fruit began unfurl. This is not a showy wine. It is balanced and has all the class and style of this great vintage. Chambertin always needs more time than the other Gevrey Grand Crus and this is no exception.
