55% pinot, majority from the Montagne de Reims, particularly Mareuil-sur-Ay, verzy, verzenay, Avenay and Trepail, 45% chardonnay, from Cote des Blancs, particularly Avize and Vertus; aged 9 years on lees; 7g/L dosage. Two years ago I announced this as a rare 2008 to drink now, and it was certainly drinking beautifully on release, but such is the sheer stamina of the sensational 2008 seaon that it is still singing with full voice and has paled only the slightest fraction.

Glorious restraint emanates in a pretty, glowing, pale-salmon hue, an almost invisible bouquet and a palate exalting now more than ever in the wonderful texture of long lees age. Delicate red cherry and wild strawberry fruit have evolved from youthful verve, now relaxing into toasty, roasted almond, creamy maturity, amid nuances of vanilla. Silky texture harmonises the magical touch of bottle age with soft chalk-infused minerality and beautiful poised tannin support, drawn out by the fine acid line of inimitable 2008 vintage.
